Hiking Ella Rock begins at Ella Town.

Ella is a tiny place with one main road that is flanked by hotels and guesthouses.

Ella is a gorgeous town with stunning countryside and views.

We decided to hike Ella Rock without a guide.

Some people say that it is really easy to get lost and you should trek with a guide.

Different articles say that the hike would take a whole day.

Some articles say that the hike would take just a three or four hour return trip.

We didn't get lost and while the hike was very strenuous we managed it in less than four hours.

The first point where we met the railway track.

Ella is a beautiful small town in the south of Sri Lanka in the Hill country.

Ella is a great base for tourists who want to explore the surrounding hills.

Everyone should cross over this black bridge.

We enjoyed breathtaking views of Badulla's green valleys.

Trains do come along every few hours so move as far out of the railway track when they passing by.

As we walked along the railway track we just plodded along at our own pace.

Sri Lanka is home to many wonderful and amazing walks and hikes.

We walked through stunning scenery.

After another twenty minutes the forest opened up.

The terrain changed from wide jungle bush to tall forest trees.

We could suddenly see for miles.

We don't think a guide is necessary to do the hike.

The hike is around 2 hours from town to the peak.

Avoid to trek with sandals or flip-flops, especially after it's been raining.

Then finally the trees came to an end and there was nothing in front of us but an abrupt drop.

Eventually the path will slope up ahead and there will be a ridge with a view.

From here it is a very steep, slippery and tough walk up to the top of Ella Rock.

Many people choose to start the Ella Rock hike early in the morning, and we certainly recommend it.

The last twenty minutes were a steep, crumbly climb.

The hike rewards you with the most breathtaking lookout across the hills.

We made it!

The silence was almost as amazing as the view.

It is a great feeling of accomplishment when you reach the rock slabs at the top.

Anyone can hike this peak.

This is a nice hike, you don't need a guide.

This is a beautiful place to feel the nature.

Wear shoes or hiking boots.

This hike is not suitable for young kids.

For avid hikers this is a must do when you visit Ella.

It is a great location to see the nature of Ella.

This hike is a must do, such a nice nature walk and the view.

Getting back, of course, is easy.

From here you can just follow the same path back to the train tracks.

I highly recommend this hike to anyone who finds themselves in Ella.
