Maun was founded in 1915 as the tribal capital of the Balawana people and administrate centre of Ngamiland. Strung out along the banks of the Thamalakane River with shopping centres, accommodation and campsites catering for everyone's needs, Maun is the gateway to the Okavago Delta. Derived from the word Maung meaning 'the place of river reeds', Maun holds true to its promise as many lodges overlook the Thamalakane River, with its vibrant birdlife, providing a cool and calm backdrop just outside the busy city centre.
Maun is easily accessible by either road or daily flights to Maun International Airport from OR Tambo International Airport In Johannesburg, South Africa. If driving, you may choose to drive via Francistown, Nata or via Serowe, Orapa. The route from Namibia is via Sehithwa or Ghanzi.
Accommodation in Maun ranges from luxury lodges to backpackers and campsites and you will find somewhere to fit your budget and taste. Most lodges have a restaurant with good food at decern prices and the locals are always happy to refer visitors to where the daily specials are. There are also several fast food options available in the town. The nightlife is vibrant, especially over weekends, and the parties continue long into the night at the many lodges and bars.
The best activity whilst in Maun is a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta with one of the charter companies operating from Maun International Airport. Another way of seeing the waterways is either a boat cruise or gliding soundlessly in a traditional mokoro or kayak. For the more adventurous, horse riding and walking safaris will get you up close and personal with the African bush!
Stocking up for your trip in Maun is easy with the wide variety of shops, butcheries and supermarkets to be found in the town. Head to Spar, Woolworths Foods, Choppies or Shoprite for all the groceries that you need. Although the supermarkets have butchery sections, we like to buy our meat at one of the two butcheries in the town which sell a wide variety of meat, as well as dairy, seafood, fruit and vegetables: Beef Boys, Delta Meat Deli - Riley's garage and Kalahari Meat Deli.
Fill up with fuel at Riley's Garage and convenience store and buy any vehicle spares you need at Auto Zone spares shop. Maun is the last place that you will be able to fill with fuel on the way to Moremi Game Reserve, and if your safari is north through Chobe National Park the only other town with fuel is Kasane. If you need to do some emergency car repairs or get tyres fixed just ask at the lodge or in the town - they will point you in the right direction.
There are ATM's available throughout the town, medical facilities, a post office and courier companies are all available in Maun.
