The Martyrs Memorial is a place you should visit while you are staying in Mekelle. From a distance, this memorial to the victims of the Derg could be mistaken for the world's biggest golf ball and tee. From up close it's another story, with larger-than-life statues flanking the tower that illustrate the true cost of war. The domed building just to the north is a museum that exalts the successes and sacrifices made by the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) during the 1970s and '80s.

The Martyrs Monument is built for an everlasting commemoration of all the patriots who aimed and sacrificed their irreplaceable lives on behalf of their people for the sole reason of self-determination of Tigrian people and social liberties during the past seventeen years of blood struggle.

There is the Tigrai Centre of Martyrs Memorable Monument. This centre is working to be one of the best centres of research, tourism, development and recreational area in the horn of Africa. The main focus of this centre is to attract local and foreign tourists, to develop the green areas, to attract investors attention on the issues of income. There is also an art gallery, an amphitheatre, a childrengarden with recreational idea, a sport field, a modern library and a quality restaurant service.
