Francis Cleyn (1582-1658)
A Wedding in a Church, the early 17th century. Standing underneath a draped canopy, the groom and bride swear the oath of martimory while receiving their blessings from a bishop. Bridesmaids and a choirboy participate in the ceremony, which is witnessed by the wedded couple's families. Ingeneral, the painting represents Youth, Juventus (age 23-41), the fourth of the Seven Ages of Man.
Reinhold Timm (died 1639)
An Academy for Noblemen, the early 17th century. Sitting behind the desk underneath a richly decorated canopy, the teacher addresses a group of young students with a speaking geature. Thus, the painting symbolises the third of the Seven Liberal Arts: Rhetoric. On the left, a young man clutches his glove, at the time the symbol of nobility. Rhetoric was a significant part of a nobleman's education.
