Letoon: This is a Lycian city lying between Kas and Fethiye. During excavations carried out since 1962 by the French Archaeological Institute a large sacred square dedicated to the goddess Leto and her children Artemis and Apollo has been dug up.
Statue Remains: In ancient times, a fire broke out in the portico, the walls of which had been restored by the Romans and the statues it contained were damaged as a result. Excavation has brought to light remains of the rubble used to repair these.
The aim was to restore the statues by utilizing these pieces of rubble. Checking each of the hundreds of fragments one by one, grouping them and reassembling them in their original form is like solving a complicated jigsaw puzzle, and requires great patience.
Conclusion: Up to now six statutes have been more or less restored by piecing together hundreds of parts. Naturally the many broken lines and cavities spoil their aesthetic appearance. However as a display of rare sculptural pieces of the 2nd century B.C., as well as of systematic and patient workmanship, they can be considered important works of art.
