Cavelossim

Benaulim beach runs into Varca and Cavelossim which has some up-market resorts. The beaches here are quieter and cleaner than Colva. The Nossa Senhora da Gloria Church at Varca (1700), a short way north of the village, has a particularly striking facade, making use of a fan-like central feature based on the conch shell to give an effect of radiating light. Its twin towers are topped by semi-domes, but doors on the ground floor and the windows on its 2 upper storeys are Romanesque.

Cavelossim's small and relatively simple Santa Cruz Church (1763) has a highly decorated altar piece, the gold leaf being set against a turquoise painted Romanesque arch. There is a Bank of Baroda near the church which accepts Visa, Mastercard and TCs, helpful staff, open 0930-1330, Monday-Wednesday, Friday, Saturday.

Mabor further south, (or Mobor) lies on the narrow peninsula where the river Sal joins the sea. Some exclusive hotel resorts have been developed, although visually they are quite unobtrusive. The Sal is a busy river and harbour for fishing boats, but it is also very pleasant for boat rides. Betty's Place, in a road opposite the Holiday Inn, arranges boat trips for fishing, dolphin viewing as well as trips up river Sal from 1030-1630 (food included) which is recommended.

Transport. To reach Cavelossim (18 km from Margao) bus journeys are uncomfortably slow; taxis charge Rs 300. Ferry Crosses the River Sal (east of Cavelossim); the road goes through Assolna and joins the main road, NH17.

From Cavelossim the shortest route inland and to the south is by the ferry crossing to Assolna east of Cavelossim which is signposted. Immediately south of Cavelossim, the road takes a sharp 90° 'S' bend around the church. After crossing the river Sal, a left turn takes you into Assolna village where a turn to the right leads through attractive countryside to the main road towards Betul. The palm-lined road which cuts through open fields before passing old and new village bungalows within shady gardens, is a much quieter alternative to the NH17 for reaching Cabo de Rama and beaches to the south.
