The "Children off to School" painting which is located at the bottom of the photograph was painted in the early 17th century. The mothers lead their somewhat reluctant children to school. The children carry provisions in little baskets, and their books are tucked under their arms. An old man points towards the school's winding stairs, a symbol of the gradual acquisition of wisdom. The motif refers to Childhood, Puer (age 5-14), the second of the Seven Ages of Man.
